|Northwest Focus Midgets Series Ready For Fred Brownfield Classic 2017!
By: Aaron Reed
The Northwest Focus Midgets Series look to take to the 3/8 banked clay oval at Grays Harbor Raceway this Friday and Saturday night for the 2017 Fred Brownfield Classic. After a thrilling two nights at Skagit Speedway on Thursday June 22nd, and Friday June 23rd during the 46th Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway, the series drivers will be ready to thrill the crowd with some side by side, wheel to wheel action.
Burlington driver Tristin Thomas has been on a hot streak, coming off back to back wins during the 2017 Dirt Cup. Thursday night saw a great battle between Thomas and Chance Crum of Snohomish, as both drivers worked their way to the front early on in the feature. Thomas and Crum worked their way through lap traffic, battling with each other, along with Granite Falls driver Nick Evans joining in as well. A mechanical issue on the final lap saw Thomas make a pass at Crum down the backstretch for the lead and going on to pick up the win. Crum held on for second, with Evans, Shane Biles and Nik Larson rounding out the top five. Friday night saw Tristin Thomas once again look lightning quick out front, picking up the win over Nik Larson of Graham, Nick Evans, Kevin Olson, who was behind the #92 Fred Brownfield tribute car, and Shane Smith rounded out the top five. Tristin Thomas won't be able to make it to the Brownfield Classic this year as he is doing the Micro Sprint Speedweek in California. All of us at the Northwest Focus Midgets Series wish him the best of luck.
The Fred Brownfield #92 tribute car that has been seen a handful of times this year throughout the Northwest Focus Midgets Series will see Fred Brownfield's grand son Seth Hespe behind the wheel. Hespe a current driver at Deming Speedway in the 1200 Mini Sprints also has experience behind the wheel of a Focus Midget picking up a handful of championships at Grays Harbor Raceway.
2016 saw Eric Turner of Lake Stevens win the first night of the Fred Brownfield Classic over Nick Evans, Hannah Lindquist, Michael Vollbrecht and Ryan Cully. The second night saw Tristin Thomas pick up the win over Evans, Seth Hespe, Vollbrecht and Turner.
The Northwest Focus Midgets Series would like to say a big thank you to "KO" Kevin Olson for his visit to the Northwest and racing with the series at Dirt Cup and we look forward to his visit next year. Olson has many accomplishments in his racing career. Olson is a monthly columnist for Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, and a writer of the book "Cages Are For Monkeys". The Northwest Focus Midgets Series has 6 books, autographed by "KO" available to purchase.
