Thomas Wins Thrilling USAC/CRA Sprint Car Feature
At Ocean Speedway
Watsonville, CA...September 8...Kevin Thomas Jr. won the 30 lap USAC/CRA Sprint Car Main Event Friday Night at Ocean Speedway. Thomas picked up the win on Saturday at Calistoga Speedway as the Wingless Sprint Cars are running their Fourth Annual Speedweek Series. Thomas got the evening started by besting the 18 car field with a fast lap of 12.848. That just barely beat the 12.873 lap of incoming point leader Brody Roa. They ran three ten lap heat races, and Austin Williams outran Speedweek point leader Damion Gardner to win the Extreme Mufflers first heat race. Cody Williams won the Brown And Miller Racing Solutions second heat ahead of Chad Boespflug. Thursday night Chico Spec Sprint winner Austin Liggett won the Circle Track Performance/Keizer Aluminum Wheels third heat ahead of Jake Swanson.
The 30 lap Main Event was a thriller with four different leaders. Swanson charged into the lead at the start and paced the first 13 laps. Gardner took over on lap 14, but he was passed by Monday night Petaluma winner Tyler Courtney for the lead on lap 17. Courtney was running strong up front, but Thomas moved in for the challenge. Thomas made his winning pass on lap 28 as Courtney faded back a few positions. Thomas brought it home to the thrilling victory ahead of Gardner, Swanson, Liggett, Boespflug, Courtney, Roa, Stevie Sussex, Geoff Ensign and C. Williams.
Reigning champion Rob Gallaher continued his march towards another championship with his 20 lap American Stock Main Event win. J.C. Elrod won the first eight lap heat race ahead of Wally Kennedy, while Matt Kile won the second heat in front of Bobby Huckaby Sr. The invert of eight put Gallaher and Austin Williams on the front row, and Gallaher charged into the lead. Huckaby came from the third row, but all he could do was chase Gallaher for a second place finish. Merced Speedway racer Nick Lawrence finished a strong third in front of Tony Oliveira and Kile.
Central Valley Mini Stock competitor Logan Doglione returned and won his fourth 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. It was a perfect evening as L. Doglione also won the eight lap heat race ahead of point leader Dakota Keldsen. Bill Beardlsey and Kate Beardsley had front row starts as B. Beardsley was the closest challenger to Keldsen's point lead. However, B. Beardsley faded as L. Doglione charged from seventh starting into the lead. L. Doglione went on to victory ahead of Brady Muller, Ryan Dolione, Keldsen and K. Beardlsey.
