Forler doubles down, sweeps ASCS Frontier at Atomic
Andrew Kunas

ATOMIC CITY, Idaho - Logan Forler again showed the way in Brodix ASCS Frontier Region sprint car action, taking the checkered flag in Saturday night at Atomic Motor Raceway and sweeping the Rumble in the Desert.

Forler, from Oriting, Washington but now living in Idaho's capital city of Boise, dominated the 25-lap main event, leading every lap except the first and was never threatened by anyone chasing him aboard the Forler Trucking No. 2L Parker-powered Maxim. It was a little different from Friday's event, where he barely held on in heavy traffic in the last few laps of that event.

Starting third in Saturday's feature, Forler quickly moved into second place on the opening lap and immediately set his sights on pole sitter Rich Martin of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Coming through Turn 4 on Lap 2, Forler got underneath Martin and motored by to take the lead for good entering the front stretch.

This weekend's races were Forler's first at the 1/3-mile dirt oval in southeast Idaho and it was a very successful trip. Forler, a former main event winner with the Lucas Oil ASCS National series and other ASCS regional tours, led 49 out of 50 main event laps over two nights, got two trophies in Rod End Supply Victory Lane and also picked up a heat race victory.

Martin and Woodscross, Utah's Chauncey Filler started on the front row and raced with each other throughout the feature. ASCS Frontier Region points leader David Hoiness, who started seventh as a result of the Top 8 redraw, moved his way up to fourth quickly and then got in the mix in an effort to extend his points lead over Martin.

A big problem came for Hoiness, however, when his right rear tire began losing air and then finally went down for good after he had gotten around Martin for third place. Hoiness stopped on the track to bring out the caution with 17 laps completed. A quick tire change in the work area by his team got Hoiness back on the track.

Filler held onto second place aboard the Billy Martin No. 74u Chevy-powered Triple X. Ned Powers, who towed all the way from Belle Fourche, South Dakota, got Martin for third in the closing laps and completed the podium aboard his own No. 0 Kasskicken-powered Maxim.

Martin settled for fourth place aboard the Martin & Clark No. 24m J&J and gained a little ground on Hoiness, who motored back through the field to finish seventh and minimize the damage to his points lead. Hoiness now holds a 63-point advantage over Martin with six scheduled events remaining.

Darren Smith of Curlew, Wash. had the run of the night, coming from the 12th starting position to finish fifth aboard the Dognotti Racing No. 81 Triple X. Damon McCune finished sixth and moved into third place in the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region point standings. Damon's father Jeremy McCune finished eighth ahead of Mindy McCord, whose ninth place effort was enough to move her into fourth place in the standings, nine tallies back of Damon McCune. Clint Anderson of South Dakota completed the Top 10.

Forler won the evening's first heat race before Hoiness picked up his second heat race win in as many nights. Martin picked up the high heat race points score when he won the third and final heat race of the evening.

Six states were represented in the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region's debut weekend at Atomic Motor Raceway, with drivers and cars from Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana and Washington showing up. Atomic Motor Raceway previously hosted the old ASCS Rocky Mountain Region several years ago. About 11 of the 17 competitors on hand were racing at Atomic for the first time.

This was the third of five consecutive weeks of action scheduled for the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region. The series and its race teams are soon right back at it with events Friday, July 28th at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S. Dakota and Saturday, July 29th at Gillette Thunder Speedway in Gillette, Wyo. The fifth straight week of action sees a Friday night event at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont. on August 4th.
