Induction Ceremony Approaches

The March 16th date of the 5th Annual Elma Auto Racing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is less than three weeks away and the EARHoF is busy putting the finishing touches on what should be an exciting evening of honor, recognition, and reward.

Six individuals will be inducted into The Hall of Fame and two more will receive special recognition for their unselfish dedication to auto racing at the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds in the ceremony that will be held at the Elma Eagles.

1978 hobby stock champion, Ken Stearns; 1983 super modified champion, Rick Leighty, three time hobby stock champion, Tom Williams; and Tom Neff, a racer and official who help lead the way from the original ½ mile to the more modern 3/10 mile will all be in attendance when they are officially inducted. Two inductees will be represented by family members. Dan West, Jr. will accept on behalf of his father Dan West, Sr., who is out of state and unable to attend. The deceased Dick Morlan, Sr. will be represented by his son, Dick Morlan, Jr.

Brownfield Exemplary Contribution award winner, Bob Valencia, will be on hand to accept his honor, while Don Fry will receive the Spoon Distinguished Service Award for his late father, Del Fry.

The activities will get underway at 6:30 with a the start of a silent auction. Between 60 and 70 items are expected to be included in the auction. 7:30 will signal the beginning of the Induction Awards Ceremony and the silent auction will conclude following the conclusion of the awards.

During the evening two pairs of Hoosier G-60 tires that are legal in the modified and street stock divisions will be raffled off, along with $100 and an EARHoF souvenir package. Hoosier Tire West of Fresno, CA donated the tires.

Racing memorabilia will be on display. Hors d’ oeuvres and cake will be served and bench racing is encouraged.

The public is welcome. Admission to the evening’s activities is free. Silent auction numbers can be obtained for $5 and raffle tickets are $20. Raffle winners must be present to claim their prize.

The Elma Eagles located at 404 W Young St in Elma will be the site of the activities on March 16th. The evening gets underway with the silent auction at 6:30. The Induction Ceremony honoring 6 racers from the 1950s thru the 1990s starts at 7:30. Also on the agenda will be the recognition of Del Fry and Bob Valencia for the Larry Spoon Distinguished Service Award and the Fast Freddie Brownfield Exemplary Contribution Award, respectively.

All inductees and award winners or their families have indicated they will be in attendance to accept their honors.

Event coordinator, Cindy Badgett expressed anticipation for an exciting event stating, "We have a great group being honored. There has been fantastic interest in this years event and it has spilled over into the silent auction with the donation of items. I’m anxious for the 16th to get here. It is going to be fun!"

The silent auction is expected to contain approximately seventy-five items on which to bid. Item values vary from a few dollars to $150+ and include pictures, posters, die cast cars, planters, sculptors, gift certificates, Mariner items, and much more. Skagit Speedway has donated tickets to their biggest events the Dirt Cup and the Summer Nationals.

$650 in prizes will be given away in a raffle during the evening. Prizes include two pair of Hoosier G-60 tires, donated by Hoosier Tire West, $100 cash, and a EARHoF package. Tickets will be sold that evening and winners must be present to claim the prizes.

Wow! What a night. Great event! Best ever! Turnout was unbelievable with standing room only. What a great bunch of auction items that I am sure netted the Hall of Fame some serious cash. Really nice to see some faces we have not seen for awhile. Great class of inductees also. Bob Valencia was also honored and spoke from the heart. Many of us feel the same Bob! Good luck on your venture over the hill and we will be over to see you for sure. Only bummer thing all night and that many were surprised about was no participation from the speedway. Don't understand that but then there is a lot of things I don't understand these days. Oh well, it is what it is. It still was an excellent event that stood proud on its own. Congrats everybody and a job well done!

A little late getting at this but had to deal with a family emergency earlier. All good now, so here goes.
Wanted to thank everyone who attended the Induction Ceremony last night. What a great standing room only turnout. Thanks to the P.U.D. for getting the lights back on. It did make it cozy for awhile.
Congratulations to all the honorees for your much deserved recognition.
Some much needed capital was raised through the silent auction and raffle. Thanks to all who participated and donated! A list of donors will be forthcoming. Thank you Hoosier Tire West for the tires. Special thanks to raffle winner Gaylon Stewart for auctioning off the two tires he won and giving the $200 to the EARHoF. A class act, that is much appreciated.
It was a great time with some fantastic bench racing. To paraphrase the old saying, "The older we get the faster we were." Thanks everyone!
