Exciting 600 Wingless Win for Crum at Deming Speedway

Everson, WA - Deming Speedway was wide and slick on Friday for the season debut of the Speedmart Hoosier Non Wing 600 division. When the dust settled, Chance Crum cruised to an impressive victory, Jared Gundersen joined him in victory lane in the 1200 class, with Colby Thornhill and Mitchell Helsel also picking up wins. Racing on the evening was sponsored by A-1 Welding and Scrap-It/Stow-It.

For Crum, it was a matter of finding the right combination to get around race leader Spud Allen that made the difference. The two swapped race lines a number of times before Chance used the inside line off the bottom of turn four to secure the lead. Crum would turn away Spud’s challenge in turn two, then gradually built up his lead over the remaining circuits to secure the victory. Allen held off an impressive array of cars to take runner up honors, as positions two through seven ran under a virtual blanket for the final few laps. Kyle Mitchell grabbed an impressive third. Riley Watkins picked up seven spots in the main to earn hard charger.

A strategic line change helped Jared Gundersen to his first win of the year in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 division. Jared led from the drop of the green, hugging the bottom of the racetrack while Nate Vaughn pressured him in the high groove. As Vaughn showed him a nose completeing lap five, Gundersen chose to head to the high side of the speedway himself. The change paid big dividends, as Jared quickly built a solid lead that he’d hold till late in the contest. A lap 23 caution for debris put JJ Hickle right on his tail, and JJ pulled even with Jared twice over the final two laps in turn two. Gundersen was up to the task both times, pulling back away and taking the victory. Hickle settled for second with Chance Crum finishing third. Seth Hespe picked up hard charger honors, advancing eight spots in the main.

Colby Thornhill pulled of a dominating main event win in the Mytrafficman.NET 6600 Restricted division. In his first appearance of the year, Thornhill threw a big league slide job on race leader Lane Taylor to take the point on lap six coming out of turn two. Taylor stayed close for a couple laps thereafter before Thornhill entered slower traffic and added some distance to his advantage. Thornhill ended up with a comfortable win at the checkered flag with Taylor taking second and Dakota Drake racing her way to third. A 15th to 8th place run gave Tatum Pospical hard charger honors.

Mitchell Helsel made his presence known in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints. After setting quick time in his group, Helsel worked from fourth to the lead by lap five and had no challengers over the final 15 laps en route to his first feature win. Jesson Jacobson ran second and for the second straight week, Brody Ferguson was third. Axel Oudman was hard charger, running from 15th to 8th.
