Mitchell Slides to 600 Win

5/26/17

Everson, WA - The summer heat arrived at Deming Speedway on Friday night at Deming Speedway, with temperatures cresting into the 80’s. With racing presented by Little Caesar’s and Les Schwab, race winners on the night included Kyle Mitchell, Chance Crum, Dakota Drake and Jesson Jacobson.

Late race passes decided the fate of a few of the Deming Speedway main events, no more so than in the Speedmart Hoosier 600 Open Division. Jared Peterson had led every lap of the race, all the way through the white flag flying when Cody Hogarth spun in turn three. The subsequent caution flag setup a green white checkered restart with lapped cars sent to the back of the field. Kyle Mitchell took full advantage of the restart, setting Peterson up for a slide job in turn three that gave Kyle the lead on corner exit. Jared kept his foot in the gas to try and re-pass Mitchell, but made contact with the front straight away wall, sending him flipping down the front stretch. On the ensuing restart, Mitchell held off Liam Ryan’s charge to pick up his second win of the year, with Ryan making his first appearance of the year pay off with a runner-up and Kevin Wilkinson running third.

Chance Crum picked up his fourth main event win of the year at Deming Speedway, his third in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class and second without a wing. Crum went nose to tail chasing Seth Hespe for the bulk of the main event, setting him up for a slide job entering turn three on lap seventeen. Hespe was unable to turn back underneath Crum, giving him the point. With heavy traffic looming, Crum went to the low side of the speedway over the final few circuits to defend the lead and take the victory, followed by hard charger Steven Hendrickson who completed his sixth to second run by nipping Nate Vaughn at the line.

One of the more entertaining main events of the young season concluded with Dakota Drake winning the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted feature. A lap 19 restart saw Drake take off right behind race leader Peyton Hagen. On a rapidly slicking off race track, Drake set up a beautiful cross under move coming out of turn two on lap 23, beating Hagen to the inside of turn three and taking over the lead. Hagen tried diving back underneath Drake over the final two laps but Drake carried momentum off the high groove like a seasoned veteran to hold on to the win. Hagen would take second with Blaine Granberg earning hard charger with his run from 11th to third.

Jesson Jacobson earned his first career Deming Speedway win by topping the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprint class. Jacobson worked to the inside of Levi Hillier to take the lead on lap 11, then held off Hillier in the closing stages to grab his first victory. Joining Jacobson and Hillier on the podium was Mitchell Helsel. Hard charger was Peyton Drake, moving up six spots.
