|This weekend drivers from all over the West Coast will be heading to Evergreen Speedway as they take on the “Big Track” for the first time in 2017 with the 7th Annual Mark Galloway 150 on the 5/8 mile track. The entry list has grown full of some of the best in the west. With over 30 Super Late Model expected teams to the drivers will tackle the “Super Speedway of the West”.
The hottest driver in the Northwest right now may be Jeff Knight with three straight main event wins at Evergreen Speedway on the 3/8 mile track. As the Monroe, WA driver and fan favorite, he knows that it’s a whole new story on the big track but hopes to carry the momentum into the weekend.
"The 5/8 mile track gives Evergreen its name 'The Super Speedway of the West', so you want to be as strong as you can be. As far as our team, we've been working really hard all year to prepare the car right in the shop, and we will do our job again this weekend. When you give your best in the shop, the opportunities and outcomes take care of themselves.” said Knight.
But Knight knows it will be a heavy task taking on some of the best in the Northwest as they come to his home track this weekend.
“I'm excited because this is my favorite track. The Bud Crown Series will bring some guys not racing for local Championship points, so I look forward to seeing how our car will measure up.” Stated Knight. “After all, the Summer Showdown is not far away."
One of the drivers that Knight will have to deal with is Tayler Riddle of Naches, WA. Last year Riddle was the only driver to claim victories on the big track sweeping both the Mark Galloway 150 and Summer Showdown 200. Riddle knows that he will have target on him as the driver to beat this weekend but that doesn’t stop his excitement of returning to Evergreen Speedway.
“I'm excited and anxious to get back on the 5/8 track at Evergreen, we had some amazing cars and races last year, I just hope we can continue the success we had.” Said Riddle.
But like many drivers with the $25,000 to win Summer Showdown just two months away, Riddle will use this race as a tune-up and test for the big race in July.
“We want to have a good run this weekend and hope to gather some really good notes for when we come back to defend our title for the Summer Showdown.” Said Riddle.
The most consistent driver as Evergreen Speedway this year has been current Super Late Model points leader Trenton Moriarity. The second-generation Monroe, WA driver is looking for big things this weekend and might have a different strategy from other drivers.
“We've been on a roll with this new Lefthander Chassis for the first 4 races. I am very confident coming into this weekend, knowing I'm under powered on the straightaways, that I can make it up in the corners!” Said Moriarity. “This car will be running the outside line and hopefully after 150 laps it pays off with a win!”
Other notable names entered for this weekend include three legends of the Northwest racing community with seven-time Touring Late Model Champion Garrett Evans of East Wenatchee, WA. The 2012 Summer Showdown Winner and former NW Tour Champion Pete Harding of Surrey, BC. Also adding his name to the list is Lakewood, WA driver Ron Eaton, who has many wins at Evergreen Speedway and throughout the west coast.
Leading the way, former Evergreen Speedway Super Late Model Champions will be adding their names to the battle with six-time Champion Naima Lang of Snohomish, WA. Other past Champions include Daniel Moore of Monroe, WA, Mike Holden of Snohomish, WA and Shane Harding of Langley, BC.
The action gets under way on Friday with an open practice session. The Mark Galloway 150 will be on Saturday featuring the Super Late Models on the 5/8 track. The night will also include the Mini Stocks, Street Stocks and Columbia River Legends on the tricky 3/8 track.
