Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (July 7, 2008) – It's now just a few short days away, as the 16th Annual Toyota Tundra ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek featuring the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series fires off this Friday night.

The 16th edition of ASCS Speedweek opens Friday night at 67 Texarkana Speedway in Texarkana, AR, with the first of six stellar events slated to take place over the course of nine nights.

Following Friday night's opener at 67 Texarkana Speedway, the series moves up Interstate 30 to Little Rock's I-30 Speedway on Saturday night for Round Two.

After on off day on Sunday, action resumes on Monday night at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, OK. Then on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 17-19, the final three rounds of the 16th Annual Toyota Tundra ASCS Speedweek take place at Devil's Bowl Speedway (Mesquite, TX), Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway and Lawton (OK) Speedway.

A $5,000 point fund is up for grabs for the top five point earners over the six race span of events, with all drivers that compete in all six rounds eligible for a set of Brodix heads to be awarded via a drawing at the July 19 Speedweek finale at Lawton.

As if there weren't enough on the line for Toyota Tundra ASCS Speedweek alone, title implications in the O'Reilly ASCoT National championship race loom huge over the course of the week.

With 18 nights of action already in the books, Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, enters Speedweek with a slight advantage in the $50,000 championship points race as he tries for an unprecedented fifth consecutive crown.

But Louisiana's Jason Johnson has nibbled away at Wright's lead over recent weeks, reducing it to just eight points following his seventh triumph of the season this past Saturday night at Missouri's Lake Ozark Speedway.

Past ASCS National champion Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma City still has the lead duo within striking distance, with Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, and Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron, KS, rounding out the current top five.

Eric Baldaccini of Keller, TX, leads the series rookie crop entering Speedweek with a ranking of sixth in points.

Other ASCoT National contenders expected for the full week include Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK), 18-year-old Jack Dover (Springfield, NE), Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK), Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX), Gary Taylor (Sapulpa, OK) and Aaron Berryhill (Broken Arrow, OK) among others.

With the O'Reilly ASCoT National series averaging 48.25 cars per night over the opening 18 events of the season, a number of other top contenders are expected to be in action over the course of the week.

Wright enters the week as the reigning ASCS Speedweek champion. Last year, Wright won four of five Speedweek events to capture his fifth career ASCS Speedweek title and first since 2000.

While Wright and Terry Gray traded off the opening eight Speedweek crowns with each driver taking honors four times apiece from 1993 to 2000, the next six years featured a like number of champions including Jason Johnson (2006), Darren Stewart (2005), Tim Crawley (2004), Shane Stewart (2003), Gary Wright (2002) and Kevin Ramey (2001).
