What was the deal with them going backwards? I found several old pics I thought was probably from Sky Valley and they were going backwards.

There was a time I think where it seemed almost all of the dirt tracks packed backwards. I asked a couple of times why and remember being told the thought was that the pressure on the dirt packing backwards was ----> and when racing the force on the track from the rear tires also was ----> and the thought was it wouldn't tear up the track as much. But then they may have very well been feeding a relative newbie to dirt a line of BS. Sure made a good story though.

If I'm not mistaken that is why Skagit did it.  Back then pit crew men used to do a lot of the packing and many of them would like to get a quick lap in.

I think "Just an old Guy" might be on to it. At least from what I remember Grandpa Fred talkin about a while back, once in 04' or 05' he came over to the GHR quarter midget track where I was racing at the time and was helping out with some track prep/repair and actually had them roll that in backwards with a pack truck. But I cant clearly remember actually seeing it anywhere else he promoted... shoulda paid more attention:?:)

In regards to the track packing issue, as I was told by Jim, the reason he mandated that the track be packed in the reverse direction was two fold.

As Rick pointed out some of the drivers wanted to get a hot lap in during packing but the main reason was the way Jim prepared the surface. He would till the track about 6" deep pack it in with water and then take a 2", what he called a sacrificial till, on the top and then pack that in.

He reasoned that that top till would blow off fairly quick to build a cushion and leave a smooth surface below. The packing in the proper direction would lay the top cut down and sometimes bind it with the lower layer which would defeat the purpose and all his hard work.

Reverse packing was something that he said he learned when he was invited back to either Eldora or Knoxville to work their track, which he felt was one of his greatest honors. Don't know how long it lasted in other parts of the country but as I recall we only did it here for a couple of years.

By the way I am not sure when that picture was taken but it must have been shortly after he bought it because the original color was green. Also the driver in it looks taller than Fred used to sit. ;)

I just found this picture in a bunch of old family photos, It must have been taken late in the season, because we changed the car's color just past mid-season.  Heck it could even be me in the car. As Fred would let us pack the track.  Almost everybody was taller than Fred, except his dad, so it could be me, but the old memory is not what it used to be.

Mark

This is Joel, Saw your name and knew it had to be you, especially when you said you were in Fred's car :)  Just wanted to say hi, haven't seen or talked to you forever. Some pretty cool pictures of Fred and his car huh! Hopefully I find some more or others will continue to post pictures. You should come down to Elma and watch Seth race sometime, especially if you come while the ASCS is there you will see all your old buddies and Debbie and all the grandkids. Next one with the ASCS is July 17th and 18th, it's also the Brownfield Memorial race. See you there! We will be there in the pits next to Seth with the 8 car

They use to do that at Ascot back in the 70's and 80's before they closed that track, I ask one night and the guy said it had something to do with the trark holding together better?
