Lutz grabs ASCS Frontier opener at Black Hills
By Andrew Kunas, series PR/Announcer

RAPID CITY, S. Dakota - Eric Lutz was wanting to do something a little different from the usual, so he went west. The move paid off nice nicely as he took the checkered flag in Friday's season opening main event for the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region sprint car tour at Black Hills Speedway.

The former ASCS Midwest Region champion resides in Sioux Falls and usually competes on that end of South Dakota and the surrounding area. Opening weekend for the ASCS Frontier Region provided the opportunity to face some different drivers for the 17-year sprint car racing veteran. He won in just his second visit to the half-mile dirt oval at Black Hills Speedway. He has never been to Wyoming's Gillette Thunder Speedway, where the series races on Saturday.

Driving his own No. 5 Maxim, Lutz passed Spearfish, S. Dakota's Clint Anderson for the lead early in the 25-lap feature after starting outside the front row. He then held off a determined D.J. Brink to take the victory, his first with the Frontier Region.

"We learned the layout of the place the first time we were here, and we learned a bit of what not to do," said Lutz. "We used some of that experience tonight, and we're basically learning to race against different racers and gain some experience."

Lutz's machine was on par with most others in Turns 1 and 2, but was superior to most others using the bottom of the track in Turns 3 and 4. He used that to make the move on Anderson.

"Clint was better in 1 and 2, but we found the bottom in 3 and 4 and it really helped us. We just stayed consistent in 1 and 2 and used 3 and 4 to our advantage," Lutz said.

Anderson eventually had problems with his car and dropped out. He then had to contend with slower traffic and Brink in the race's late stages. Brink, who finished second in the ASCS Frontier Region point standings last year, made a number of runs at Lutz, but couldn't make anything go. On the final set of turns Brink had gotten another run going at Lutz that could've potentially set up a pass on the next lap, if there had been one. Brink, from Sturgis, S. Dakota was forced to settle for second aboard the SMAC Motorsports No. 75 Parker-powered Eagle but was otherwise pleased his performance.

"We were close. The car got a lot better at the end of race, for sure," said Brink, who has set sights on the ASCS Frontier Region title in 2017. "I had that run off of 3 and 4 on the last lap. One or two more laps might've been a difference, but Eric was very consistent. He's a good driver."

Brink had started sixth and moved his way up after battles with David Hoiness and New Powers. Powers, from Belle Fourche, finished third in his Cornella-powered Maxim to round complete an all South Dakota podium. Hoiness, from Billings, finished fourth in the Hoiness Racing No. 27DD Wesmar-powered J&J, holding off Helena, Montana's Trever Kirkland, who had one of the better runs in feature, coming the 11th starting position to finish fifth in the Kirkland Racing No. 37 Two Dot Tech-powered Triple X.

Rich Martin, Eric Flatmoe, Mark Chisholm, Shad Petersen and Robert DeHaan rounded out the Top 10.

Lutz drew the second starting position in the Top 8 redraw after posting the top score in heat race action, which he got by winning Heat 2 from the sixth starting position. Anderson won the first heat and Brink motored away with the win in Heat 3. Those three were joined in the redraw by Hoiness, Powers, Flatmoe, Martin and Chisholm.

Twenty cars and drivers from South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana were on hand Friday at Black Hills Speedway. The series will return, along with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, to Black Hills Speedway on Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15.

The series races Saturday at Gillette Thunder Speedway. Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
