McCune captures ASCS Frontier checkers at Sweetwater
Andrew Kunas

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyoming - A few months ago, Jeremy McCune was wondering if he was ever going to race again. Friday night, he completed his comeback from suffering second and third degree burns and won the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region sprint car main event at Sweetwater Speedway and ending a very long ASCS winless drought.

McCune suffered those burns on his knees and legs at another sprint car event in Missouri in May, requiring surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. McCune was sidelined for a time and wasn't cleared by doctors to return to racing until the first week of July. McCune quickly got back into the swing of things and soon found himself running in the Top 10 and Top 5 regularly at ASCS Frontier Region events. The Shepherd, Montana driver's hard work paid off Friday.

Starting on the outside of the front row, McCune took the lead from Zac Taylor on Lap 3 and motored away from the field the rest of a 25-lap event that went non-stop. It was McCune's first victory in a sprint car in more than a year - his last win coming in an event at Eagle Track Raceway in Washington state on Memorial Weekend in 2016. His drought in ASCS competition went back further as he had last won in 2009 with the old Rocky Mountain Region. McCune's Friday night triumph was his first with the Frontier Region.

After taking the lead, McCune was never threatened for the lead by anyone, and only had the occasional difficulty passing slower cars aboard his own No. 0J Wesmar-powered J&J. Stopping on the front stretch after the race, McCune was handed the checkered and climbed on the back of his car and waved to the fans in attendance at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Rock Springs.

"I needed this," McCune said following the race. "I have a lot of help and I just want to thank everyone. The past few months have been tough, and it was so great to get this win and do it front of all these fans. I'm glad everyone is here.

After leading the opening circuits, the 18-year-old Taylor of nearby Green River, Wyo. ran second for much of the event but lost the spot in the closing laps to a hard charging Ned Powers. The Belle Fourche, South Dakota driver, already a two time winner on the ASCS Frontier Region trail this season, finished second aboard his own No. 0 Kasskicken-powered Maxim.

Taylor, who is leading the IMCA 305 Colorado points, was making his ASCS debut and impressed many with his third place finish aboard the Terry Taylor No. 86 USA-powered Triple X.

After struggling in the opening laps and falling back to eighth at one point, series points leader David Hoiness of Billings, Mont. got in a groove and also moved forward. Meanwhile, Cheyenne, Wyo. driver Rich Martin was running in the Top 3 at one point but began sliding backwards. Martin, who is still sitting second in the points, was hoping to cut into the lead held by Hoiness but instead slipped back to sixth while Hoiness got ahead of him. Finishing fourth in his family's No. 27DD Wesmar-powered Maxim, Hoiness increased his lead over Martin to 108 tallies with two points races remaining.

Logan Forler of Boise, Idaho finished fifth in the Forler Truck No. 2L Parker-powered Maxim. Martin wound up sixth and was the last car finishing on the lead lap after the race was green from start to finish.

Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Forler, Chuncey Filler of Utah and McCune. Powers earned the top passing points score of the evening when he finished third after starting sixth in the evening's second heat race.

While Sweetwater Speedway has hosted ASCS sprint car events in the past, specifically the old Rocky Mountain Region, Friday's show was the debut at the southwest Wyoming facility for the ASCS Frontier Region. The series races again at Sweetwater Speedway on Saturday. One points race remains following that.
