Wheatley Captures First Career Podium With ASCS National Tour

Inside Line Promotions - ELMA, Wash. (July 3, 2018) - Austen Wheatley posted his career-best result with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com last Saturday during the Fred Brownfield Classic finale at Grays Harbor Raceway.

The weekend got off to a rough start for Wheatley, who finished where he started - eighth - in a heat race on Friday before maneuvering from 10 th to fifth place in a B Main.

The pill draw was favorable on Saturday as Wheatley lined up on the outside of the second row for a heat race.

"Travis Rilat, who started right in front of me, took the lead and we were third," he said. "Something broke on his car so that moved us up to the outside of the front row for the restart. We took the lead on the start and won it."

Wheatley's heat race win made him the high-points driver and earned a spot into the feature draw. He pulled the No. 6 to start the A Main on the outside of the third row.

"I didn't want to start on the bottom and get pinched so I drew the number I wanted," he said. "Our car got better as we went on, but we had a right rear tire going down at the start. Before the red flag our right rear was down to five pounds because the bleeder stuck. We took the bleeder out and filled the tire back up with air during that red."

Wheatley gained a couple more positions and used a late-race pass in traffic to garner a third-place result.

"Traffic was tough," he said. "Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) and Jason (Solwold) were putting them down a lap so quick. When me and Joey (Saldana) got to them there were six or eight of them all over the place."

Wheatley's third-place result also marked his best finish of the season.

June 29 - Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. - Heat race: 8 (8); B Main: 5 (10).

June 30 - Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. - Heat race: 1 (4); Feature: 3 (6).
