Jason Solwold Flexes His Muscles at the Fred Brownfield Classic

By Gary Costa

Elma, Wash. (June 30, 2018) – After picking up the victory on Night 1 of the prestigious Fred Brownfield Classic, Jason Solwold took to the 3/8-mile dirt oval on Night 2 in the Shaylen Raye Motorsports No. 18. Solwold finished in the runner-up position, capping off a very successful weekend of racing.

The three-time Summer Thunder Sprint Series champion's night began with a pill draw for the top four finishers from Friday's 25-lap Feature. Solwold would start fourth on the grid alongside 2018 Dirt Cup victor, Seth Bergman. The front row would consist of the extremely fast company of Henry Van Dam and Sam Hafertepe Jr.

When the green lights flashed on around Grays Harbor Raceway for the start of the 30-lap Feature, Solwold mashed the gas and took off in the Mike Anderson and Monica Baca owned rocket, immediately moving into the third spot.

An early Yellow Flag would bunch the field and put Van Dam, Hafertepe Jr., and Solwold nose-to-tail for the restart. When the race went Green, the three divers tore into turn-one, sinking their right rear tires deep into the clay; however, a flip would bring the action to a halt.

When the Green Flag flew once again, Solwold began challenging Van Dam, but the caution lights flashed on during the tenth circuit. Van Dam's brakes caught fire during the caution and pulled into the infield, moving Solwold into second.

During the slow down, the Red Flag came out for an incident in the pits. During the stoppage, it began to lightly rain, but race officials deemed the track safe for racing.

With 20-laps remaining, the race raged on. Solwold drove past the lapped cars on the restart, and with Hafertepe Jr. in his crosshairs, he set sail after him. The leaders navigated heavy lapped traffic, but a Yellow would slow the furious pace on Lap 18.

During a Lap 23 restart, Jason cleared the lapped cars between him and Sam, and was in search of the race leader; however, Hafertepe Jr. would prove too difficult to catch this night, and claimed the 30-lap prize.
