Smith, Simpson, and Briggs Jr Feature Winners

Three classes of cars took to Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday night as the 360 Sprint Cars, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, and Outlaw Tuners brought a great field of cars for some racing action.

Outlaw Tuners

Don Briggs Jr of Woodland and Olympia's Zach Dalrymple set the front row of the 15 lap Outlaw Tuner main event. Briggs Jr. took the early lead, but Dalrymple stayed right there until Zachary Stallsmith of Olympia took over the second position. The fourth position saw a battle between Max Sanford of Belfair, and Tenino driver Chad Norton. Briggs Jr continued to lead, with Stallsmith staying within striking distance for a handful of laps. Sanford took over the third spot from Dalrymple and set his sights on Stallsmith for the runner up position. Norton chased both drivers looking for any chance to make a move. Briggs Jr continued to pull away from the rest of the field, leaving the battle for second the race to watch. At the end of the 15 lap feature, Briggs Jr picked up his first win of 2019, Stallsmith, Sanford, Norton and Dalrymple rounded out the top five. Briggs Jr and Dalrymple were heat race winners.

Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks

Aberdeen's Austin Kerrigan took the early lead in the 20 lap Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks feature with Zack Simpson of Aberdeen, and Hoquiam driver Jack Parshall right there on his back bumper. Kerrigan ran the high side of the 3/8 banked clay oval as Simpson stayed low looking for a way to take over the lead. A handful of times early in the race Simpson raced side by side, but couldn't make the pass. Scott Fritts of Montesano, and Aberdeen driver Matt White raced for the fourth position until the caution flag flew for Olympia's Devon Harper as he slowed in turn two. The Lap 6 caution allowed Simpson another shot at Kerrigan. Parshall moved into the second position, taking it away from Simpson. Lap 14 saw disaster strike for Kerrigan as his night ended with motor issues while leading, giving the top spot to Simpson. At the end of the 20 lap feature Simpson picked up the win over Parshall, Fritts, White, and Elma's Ryen Haney. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Kerrigan and Simpson with Parshall picking up fast time.

360 Sprint Cars

Mill Creek's Cam Smith led the 15 car field to the green flag in the 360 Sprint Car feature. Shelton's Jay Cole ran in the second spot, but bobbled in turn four, giving up the second position to Bellingham's Brock Lemley. Cole made a move back for second off of turn four, but couldn't make the pass. Lemley saw issues going into turn one, and brought out the caution early in the feature. Smith led Cole, and Quilcene's JJ Hickle to the green flag on the restart. Hickle had tough company with Jason Solwold of Burlington right on his back bumper. Solwold looked to the high side off of turn four but couldn't make the pass. Smith quickly caught lap traffic, after pulling away from Cole, figuring out where to make his move on the slower cars. Lap traffic gave Cole a shot at catching Smith. Cole saw a few opportunities to make a pass, but just didn't find himself close enough to Smith. The battle for the fifth position saw lap traffic become a factor between Jason Reed of Elma, and Tyler Anderson of Everett. Anderson made a move on Reed in turn one to move into the top five. After a one caution feature event Smith picked up his first win of 2019. Cole, Hickle, Solwold and Anderson rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Cole and Smith, with Hickle picking up quick time.

Racing will resume next Saturday night as the Northwest Focus Midgets Series will make their first appearance of 2019, along with the PHRA Dwarf Cars. Also on hand will be the Shipwreck Beads Modifieds and Outlaw Tuners. Gates open at 5:30PM with racing at 7PM.
